Brazil guaranteed to receive Russian fertilizers

President Jair Bolsonaro was guaranteed by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Brazil is to receive an uninterrupted supply of fertilizers for its agricultural sector. The commitment was reinforced during a telephone conversation confirmed by Bolsonaro on Monday (Jun 27) and prompted an official statement from the Russian government.

“The problems around global food security were discussed extensively. The Russian president made a detailed assessment of the causes of the difficult situation facing the world market of agricultural products and fertilizers. He emphasized the importance of restoring the architecture of free trade for food products and fertilizers, destroyed as it was by Western sanctions. In this connection, Vladimir Putin stressed that Russia is committed to fulfilling its obligations to ensure uninterrupted supplies of Russian fertilizers to Brazilian farmers,” Putin’s administration stated.

Brazil consumes eight percent of the world’s fertilizer output—estimated at 55 million tons—but imports 85 percent of supplies used by agribusiness, chiefly from Russia, which has struggled under a strong economic embargo imposed by the US, Western European countries, and Japan, as a result of the military invasion in Ukraine.
